Navassa Environmental Initiatives

Navassa Environmental Plan:

In August of 2010, the Navassa Town Council adopted an Environmental Plan for municipal operations. The Environmental Plan 2010-2015 describes various environmental initiatives the town will pursue over the next five years. These initiatives include: energy conservation, water conservation, recycling and waste reduction strategies, environmental education for municipal employees and the public, land conservation, and green office supply procurement policies. The plan was created through the hard work of the town's Environmental & Stormwater Advisory Committee. Click on the link to the right to read the plan.

NCLM Green Challenge:

In February of 2010, the Navassa Town Council adopted a resolution to participate in the North Carolina League of Municipalities (NCLM) Green Challenge. The Green Challenge recognizes cities and towns that have made significant achievements in reducing natural resource consumption and also provides a means for municipalities to exchange information and ideas related to environmental initiatives. By participating in the Green Challenge the Town of Navassa is demonstrating its desire to become more sustainable by pursuing measures designed to conserve natural resources, emphasize the benefits of energy conservation, protect natural habitats and open space, promote environmental stewardship, and help educate the public about environmental issues. Green Building Policy:

In June of 2010, the Navassa Town Council adopted a resolution to assure that all future town buildings over 3,000 heated square feet will be designed and built in accordance with the standards and requirements of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System at the "Certified Level" or higher. The LEED rating system was established by the US Green Building Council and is the premier rating system used to encourage buildings to be more environmentally sustainable through the conservation of water, energy, and other natural resources. Green buildings have been proven to reduce operating expenses associated with utilities and will thereby save taxpayer's money in reduced costs to the town, while also setting an example in our community of the town's commitment to environmental protection.
